Sam on Feb 27 hike
Family of 4 who moved to the Pacific Northwest because we love the outdoors and all that the Seattle area has to offer. Our kids go to french immersion school so for the 2nd time is as many years we are off to "real" french school...IN FRANCE!
In October the kids had a week off school so we went to Chatham and Bayfield, Ontario. The colours were beautiful. It was just before Halloween so Sam is wearing his Spiderman costume. Madeleine was Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty but she didn't need to wear her costume 24/7 like her brother!
Here's a sport we are going to do a lot. This is taken in Ganges Harbour. I had a single kayak. We love it. You are so close to the water and can observe things so closely. The kids are old enough to almost help and to stay still. We also rented a kayak in Seattle. It was a triple so we were all in one. We circumvented Lake Union and got swamped once. We stopped at Gas Works park and went along where lots of house boats are moored. Our final hour we kayaked under 520 and explored the lily pads near the Arboretum. The adventure was crossing the paths of the Sunday afternoon craft returning from the Sound to Lake Washington. We had to work like a team and really paddle to avoid becoming fish meat. Ron's knee held up well and Kayaking will be an activity we will do more often in the coming years.
Here's the 4 of us. I was hoping for a great family photo that I could use for our Christmas card but it got rejected. Again, I will say it was such a hot day that it was tough getting cooperation for a formal photo. This garden is Lisa's farm which is full of gardens and these fantastic (newly built) walls which was the kid's playground. What a lovely place!
We all gathered at Lisa's farm to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday. Here are 14 of us. This is as close as we've ever gotten to a family reunion. It was a hot day so the photos were a tough sell on the kids. We had a delicious meal in the "barn" and dancing afterwards. Beaucoup de fun!
We have lots of photos of the kids in the woods. We go hiking every weekend almost. We had just returned from seeing a very old cedar tree that had been saved from loggers by some activists. We call the kids "intrepid hikers". They have great stamina and it is such a joy to see them skipping along a trail and bending to look at a giant SLUG! On the days when we wondered if we'd made the right move, moving from TX where we had such good friends and a much less expensive standard of living, I just had to see the kids in the woods to know that YES... this life was ok!
The pool was heated all year round. May have been too cold for me but for the kids it never was. Both kids can swim now so we don't have to always go in the water. Have to watch Sam pretty closely as he loves to just BE.. underwater & he can't always touch the bottom. Madeleine celebrated her 6th birthday on the 6th of May and she wanted 6 friends to go swimming with her! We managed 3 but later had a joint party with a friend at a park with all her classmates.
Living in the NW has given us so many opportunities. We had just finished cycling on a board walk in Alki Beach. Madeleine had done 5 miles! quite a feat on a child's bicycle that weighed more than either Ron or mine. Looking in the bay at jelly fish and the barnacles is really an educational experience. In Seattle every weekend we go on an outdoor adventure!
Every Friday night we go to Pagliacci's in Bell Square for their great pizza. They know us... or I should write, they know SAM! He is famous there for getting the beat. They have background music, lots of 70s stuff and Sam finds the beat and dances. Lately he's been too embarrassed to dance but back when this photo was taken, he was so cute. We love this restaurant not only because the pizza is so good but it has given us a great sense of belonging. We are part of the town already!
We rented a cottage right on the Pacific in Newport, OR. It was a blustery week but oh so fun. We had lots of board games and Yahtzee! Madeleine learned to add with dice. We ran everymorning on the beach against the wind. Trying to counter the great meals we cooked and the wine we drank.
